A S D F G H J K L ; play the white keys, and W E T Y U O P play the black keys. Each piano key shows its letter.A piano repeats the same 12-note pattern again and again. The white keys are named C D E F G A B, then the pattern starts again at the next C. Black keys come in groups of two and three, which is how you find your way around:
With Sa set to C (the default here), the notes line up like this:
| Western | C | D | E | F | G | A | B |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sargam | Sa | Re | Ga | Ma | Pa | Dha | Ni |
The black keys give the komal (flat) notes: komal Re (C♯), komal Ga (D♯), komal Dha (G♯), komal Ni (A♯). The black key between F and G is tivra Ma (F♯). In Indian music Sa can be any key, set to suit the singer's voice. Practising with a tanpura drone helps; try our Online Tanpura.
All three are in the public domain and use only white keys, which makes them perfect first songs. Then practise in time with the Online Metronome.
There's a delay when I play. Why?
Some Bluetooth speakers and headphones add audio delay. Wired headphones or your device's built-in speakers usually respond instantly.
Can I play chords?
Yes. Press several keys on your keyboard at once, or tap several notes with multiple fingers on a touch screen.
