How do I aim the ball?

Where the ball hits the paddle decides its angle: the centre sends it almost straight up, the edges send it off at a sharp angle.

How many levels are there?

Levels keep going. Each new level adds a row of tougher bricks and makes the ball a little faster.

Brick Breaker is the classic ball-and-paddle arcade game. Keep the ball in play with your paddle and bounce it into the wall of bricks at the top. Clear every brick to finish the level. If the ball falls past your paddle, you lose a life. You start with three.

Bricks and scoring

Coloured bricks break in one hit and score 10 points × the level number.
Silver bricks (from level 2) need two hits. They crack on the first.
Each new level adds a row and speeds the ball up slightly.

Tips for a higher score

Aim with the paddle edges. Hitting the ball near the paddle's edge sends it out at a steep angle, which is the only way to steer it.
Tunnel through one side. Break a gap at the edge of the wall and get the ball above the bricks. It will bounce around up there clearing bricks while you rest.
Watch the ball, not the paddle. Your hand learns where the paddle is. Your eyes should follow the ball's path.
Don't chase the last brick. Keep the ball moving safely and let the angles bring it round.

A short history

Ball-and-paddle games go back to the early arcade era. Atari's Breakout (1976) set the brick-wall format, and later games such as Arkanoid added power-ups and special bricks. The simple idea has stayed popular for decades because it's easy to learn and hard to master.
